What is Internet Marketing? How Does It Work?
An astounding 80% of Fortune 500 Companies don't know about SEO (Search Engine
Optimization) or any Internet Marketing techniques. Most companies when asked
about their online marketing campaign refer back to running PPC (Pay Per Click)
campaigns with Google Adwords, MSN Adcenter, or Yahoo. PPC is only one type of
Internet marketing just like a monorail is only one type of train.
In this example we will use the analogy of trains and the network of grids in
how it parallels with Internet marketing.
SEO (Search Engine Optimization)
SEO is a very big part of Internet marketing. Imagine SEO as a type of train
with unlimited seating potential. It can send an unlimited amount of traffic,
the only limit being the amount of people willing to go to your particular
train station (website). Google in this case can be considered New York City's
"Grand Central" station. It has the most people flowing through it, and can
send them to other train stations (websites) around the continent.
SEO is a type of train that is not utilized very much but can be very powerful.
It has unlimited seating (No limit on people that can go to your website). It
has unlimited speed (Rate varies according to your popularity only). But it is
a real beast to start up. It's sometimes slow, if you don't have the right
conductor (SEO Consultant), or an amateur and inexperienced conductor (Fake $99
SEO Companies).
A real SEO company knows the process needed to get visitors to your website. The
great thing about the SEO train is that it is completely free for passengers
(visitors) and train station owners (website owners). All you have to do is
build the tracks (links) to your train.
But SEO has a special team (SEO Consultants) that it sends to your train station
(website) to fix problems that may occur once people get there, and makes sure
your train station (website) can handle the amount of visitors. The SEO team
can modernize your station (Re-design), upgrade your facilities (re-coding),
and makes sure visitors find what they are looking for when they arrive (user
friendly website).
Grand Central Station (Google) sends out inspectors (search engine crawlers) to
inspect your station and makes sure it is worthy of sending visitors to your
train station (website) since passengers have their trust. The Grand Central
inspectors check for other tracks (links from other train stations). The more
tracks that go to your website, the more popular and trusted you appear to be.
This is their biggest factor when deciding to send visitors to your station
(website), but not the only factor.
The goal for the SEO team (consultants) is to negotiate with other train
stations (websites) and create tracks (link) to your train station (website).
Sometimes the hired SEO team already has relationships with other train
stations, but the key here is to be weary of where their tracks (links) are
coming from. Some times it can be in very bad areas (Spam neighborhoods), which
send the worst type of traffic, if they send it at all. Your train station
(website) does not want to be linked to these types of neighborhoods. (Learn

PPC
Another type of train that sends traffic is called PPC (Pay Per Click). It is
one of the fastest types of trains, but it is very expensive. This type of
train is available from Grand Central (Google) as well. Unlike SEO, once you
stop paying the PPC Central Headquarters (Google Adwords), they stop sending
traffic. With SEO, you continue getting traffic once you stop paying, but over
time will start to dwindle down if there is new competition and they use SEO to
get traffic a well.
The PPC traffic is considered the express train. You have to pay for your
customers to get to your train station (website). The more you pay, the more
people that come to your station (website). But where most other train
stations (websites) fail is the type of people coming to your website through
PPC. Unlike SEO where visitors are naturally visiting your website, PPC sends
people that may not be 100% interested in going to your train station
(website). It may not be what they are looking for. The way to combat this is
to focus in on whom PPC advertises to, and what is advertised about your great
train station (website). Some PPC management companies simply do not take the
extra step in understanding what visitors are coming to your train station
(website), and just spends hard earned money to send as much traffic as
possible. Be very careful of these types of companies, since they are the
reason most other train stations (websites) have a bad experience with PPC. If
PPC is done right, it can lead to great results. (Learn more about PPC - Pay
Per Click).
Affiliate
Affiliate Marketing is a type of train that the very big train stations
(websites like Amazon, EBay, Wal-Mart, Dell, etc) use. It's a special train
that is sent from other train stations (affiliate websites). The other train
station is only paid when a passenger gets to the big train station, and buys
or uses their service or products; otherwise it was just a free ride. The
secret to the Affiliate Marketing train though is that any train station can
signup to get this type of train, several of smaller train stations don't know
this though. Managing the relationship is the key to having a successful
affiliate marketing campaign. (Learn more about Affiliate Marketing).
Email Marketing
Email marketing is a type of train that has had a bad reputation in the past
since most Email Marketing companies do not do it correctly. This type of train
builds a track from visitors' homes (home email program). Imagine if you walk
outside your door and there is a train waiting for you to take you somewhere.
An uninvited train invitation (email) will have a negative reaction. But an
invited train invitation that was signed up for is going to have a better
impact. The key here it to only send Email Marketing trains to visitors that
have signed up already at your train station (website), and have the power to
unsubscribed as well. (Learn more about Email Marketing).
Social Media Marketing
Social Media Marketing is both a new and old type of train. This train sends
traffic from other high trafficking train stations. The unique thing about this
train station is that you can setup hubs (web pages) at these types of train
stations; communicate while sending traffic to your train station. The Social
Media stations are where most of the visitors tend to hangout. Harvesting the
power of these hubs can create a tide wave of traffic.
