You will spend more time in your office than anywhere else during the week. Your office design can make or break the time spent there. Nothing will make it like being at home, but you can do things to make it more comfortable. Some design changes may also help increase your productivity. One type of design that works well for offices is Feng Shui. The definition of Feng Shui is that it is “the rules Chinese philosophy that govern spatial arrangement and orientation in relation to patterns of yin and yang and the flow of energy (qi); the favorable or unfavorable effects are taken into consideration in designing…” There different considerations to include and exclude when it comes to Feng Shui office design. FENG SHUI DO’S FOR AN OFFICE If you want to be in a position that represents being in charge, you will want to put your office desk in the farthest corner from the entrance. This is considered the “command position. It is believed that position the desk in this way can add to offers of advancement. Your office chair should be positioned so that there is a wall behind you when you are sitting in it. There should not be a window, but a corner is OK. This will create supportive energy. If you do have a window, position your chair so that a tall building is behind you. Again, this will provide support. Your computer should be placed in the north or west area of your office to promote creativity. If your job doesn’t require creativity on the computer, but it is used to produce income, it is best to have your computer in the southeast area of your office. A safe in the west or northwest area of your office will bring in a metal element while symbolizing business financial security and prosperity. FENG SHUI DO NOT’S FOR AN OFFICE Your office desk and office chair should not be in direct alignment with the door. It is believed that if you sit directly in front of a door you will be in the direct path of any negative energy that may be come into your office. Seating should be to the right or to the left of the door. When doing business you should not turn your back towards the door. Opportunity and business enter through the door, so you should always face it while doing business so that business, sales, etc. can come to you. Facing storage rooms, elevators, closets, stairs, toilets, or escalators are believed to have a negative affect on business and income. Simple angling or partially closing a door can prevent this from occurring when you have limited options when positioning your office desk and office chair. Ergonomic office furniture is a good match for Feng Shui office design. It will make sure your time in your office doesn’t cause backaches, carpel tunnel syndrome, headaches, and other physical problems from sitting long hours in non-ergonomic furniture. Pain and discomfort will produce negative energy in your office. To buy office furniture for your office, look over the selection from Corporate Design Choice.
